Our hormones shift throughout the menstrual cycle, which is why symptoms like PMS, irregular periods or low energy can show up when things are out of balance. One simple practice I often recommend is seed cycling. It’s a gentle and natural way to support hormonal balance using everyday foods.
Understanding Your Cycle
Your cycle has two main phases:
Follicular phase (Day 1–14): Begins on the first day of your period and ends at ovulation. Oestrogen rises to help eggs mature in the ovaries.
Luteal phase (Day 15–28): Follows ovulation and leads up to your next period. Progesterone rises to support a potential pregnancy. If the egg isn’t fertilised, hormone levels drop and a new cycle begins.

How Seed Cycling Works for Hormones
Seed cycling uses specific seeds at different times in your cycle to support natural hormone changes.
Follicular phase: Add 1 tablespoon each of flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds. They contain fibre, zinc, omega-3s and phytoestrogens, which support oestrogen balance, mood, digestion and energy.
Luteal phase: Switch to 1 tablespoon each of sunflower and sesame seeds. These are rich in vitamin E, selenium and calcium to support progesterone and ease PMS symptoms.
This daily habit can help keep oestrogen and progesterone in better balance, which may reduce common hormonal issues like irregular periods or menstrual cramps.
Tips for Getting Started
Use ground seeds to help with absorption: store them in the freezer to keep them fresh.
Add to smoothies, porridge, yogurt, overnight oats or raw energy balls.
Sprinkle over salads or roasted veg.
Make a seed butter snack or swap in seeds when making things like hummus or pesto.

What If Your Cycle Is Irregular or Absent?
If your cycle isn’t regular, follow a simple 14-day rotation. You can also use the moon cycle to guide your seed cycling:
New Moon to Full Moon: Flax and pumpkin
Full Moon to New Moon: Sunflower and sesame
This is a simple way to support hormone balance naturally, even if your period is unpredictable.
Seed cycling for hormonal health isn’t a quick fix but it’s a steady food-based way to care for your body. Many people find their cycles become more regular, their moods feel more balanced and PMS improves over time.
